Coach Renee Slone (since 2006) played for University of Illinois (as Renee Heiken) from 1990-93. She was a three-time All-American and was honored as 1993 National College Player of the Year.

Illinois came up two strokes short of a nationals berth, taking seventh in the 2018 NCAA D-1 Madison Regional at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. Duke won the region title with a 14-under 850 to beat runner-up Virginia by nine strokes. The six teams advancing from Madison to nationals were Duke, Virginia, Southern California, Arizona State, Ohio State and Northwestern. Weather was windy with some rain at the par 72, 6,328-yard course, where the average 18-hole score was 74.4 strokes.
Grace Park tied for 11th (73-73-69=215) and Tristyn Nowlin (72-73-73=218) and Chayanid Prapassarangkul (74-69-75=218) tied for 30th to lead the Wildcats.
Illinois, 14 shots off the lead after two rounds, rallied to tie for second in the 2018 Big Ten Conference Championship at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Defending champion Michigan State won for the fifth time in eight years, defeating co-runners up Maryland and Illinois by four strokes. Northwestern and Ohio State tied for fourth. Weather was cool and windy at the par 72, 6,357-yard course, which yielded an average 18-hole score of 75.2 strokes.
