Coach Greg Sands (since 2001) came to Texas Tech as assistant men’s golf coach in 1999 and became head coach two years later. He has led the Red Raiders to NCAA post-season play each year.  Sands played on some very good TCU teams including WAC (Western Athletic Conference) Champions in 1997 and 1998. He also earned Academic All-WAC honors while playing for the Horned Frogs. He graduated from TCU in 1997 (communications, history).

Texas Tech shot 289-288-288 to take ninth of 13 in the 2019 NCAA D-1 Myrtle Beach Regional at TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. Illinois, two shots out of first after two rounds, shot a 16-under 272 during the final round to beat runner-up Ohio State by five strokes. The five teams advancing from Myrtle Beach to nationals were Illinois, Ohio State, Wake Forest, California and Nevada-Las Vegas. Weather was breezy at the par 72, 6,950-yard course, where the average 18-hole score was 73.2 strokes. Players carded 72 subpar rounds over three days.

Ivan Ramirez tied for 12th (70-71-72=213) and Sandy Scott tied for 20th (74-71-71=216) to lead the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech improved its scores each round and claimed fifth in the 2019 Big 12 Conference Championship at The Greenbrier Golf Club in Sulpher Springs, W.V. Oklahoma State rode a second round 12-under 268 to an 11-stroke win over runner-up Texas Christian. Oklahoma and Texas tied for third. The tournament was reduced from 72 to 54 holes due to poor weather. The course was par 70, measuring 7,201 yards and produced an average 18-hole score of 71.6 strokes.

The Red Raiders were led by Sandy Scott, who tied for fifth (69-70-66=205). Ivan Ramirez tied for 17th (71-73-69=213).
